2016. It’s incredible to think that two and a half years ago I made the decision to stop playing volleyball. This weekend, I sat down and watched as my old teammates fought for their chance to get back on the Olympic stage. I got goosebumps as I reminisced about my journey the last three years and where my decisions have taken me. I never would have guessed I would be watching that Olympic qualifier at 2am in my room, the night before my own game, in Brussels, Belgium. It’s funny how things work out because it wasn’t my plan to be here. In fact, one or two different choices and I might have been on that court with them, or instead, watching the men’s qualifier in Edmonton tonight. It’s amazing to think of the impact only a few decisions have on your life but it’s also incredible because deep down I know, at this moment, this is where I was meant to be. So, here’s a little update on how things are going over here for Barbar!

Exhibition Matches: Barbar vs. Terville
Jan 9th L : 2-3
Jan 10th W : 3-0
It’s hard to sum up the first half of our season as anything more than a rollercoaster ride. We are currently sitting at 3-6, 7th place in Ligue A and only a few points back from a playoff position in the top 6. Our team is strong and with better consistency we are a scary match up for any team. We saw that throughout the first half, taking a few top teams to five sets in order to remain afloat in the standings. But with inconsistent play comes wavering confidence which led us to lose a few very important games. Nonetheless, 2016 gives us the opportunity for a rematch against each team in our league and I’m confident in our ability to break into the top 6 for playoffs.
After an amazing Christmas holiday, traveling, seeing friends and taking a much needed break from volleyball, I feel completely rejuvenated heading into the second half of the season. And what better way to kick off 2016 than to play against Terville, a team from France who kicked our butts back in preseason. Everyone was excited to play and we weren’t prepared to accept the same outcome as September. Taking our competition by surprise, we came out strong and steady with aggressive serving. We definitely raised our level and although we weren’t able to maintain it into the fifth set on Saturday, we came back fired up today. Today was the first time this year I’ve seen our team play consistently throughout the entire match. Even with Terville taking over the lead a couple of times we stayed confident and we played some of our best volleyball at the ends of each set. With an ace to finish off the third set, we finally proved we can beat a good team 3-0. Taking that energy into next weekend against Charleroi and through this second half, I have high hopes for what this team can do come playoff time!
Looking forward to sharing an exciting 2016 :).
